If you are looking for a holiday cottage in Cornwall, this pretty Cornish cottage in Polruan is perfect. With stunning views over the popular village of Fowey (pronounced 'Foy') this cottage is the ideal getaway for your Cornish holiday.

Whether you prefer an "out and about" holiday or a "stay in the area" holiday, Amelia Cottage is the perfect base for either.  The cottage is within easy travelling distance of The Eden Project and many other Cornwall attractions and pursuits. Throughout the year, there are local events to keep you occupied - the Daphne du Maurier Literary Festival, Fowey Regatta, Fowey Fringe Festival, Fowey Lifeboat Week, Fowey Christmas Market and Polruan Carnival. Polruan Castle is considered to be one of the Fowey Valley's most attractive historic sites.

Your holiday home, Amelia Cottage, is
a charming and typical Cornish cottage nestled into the hillside of Polruan and situated near to Polruan Harbour.  With traditional sash windows and a bright white exterior, the property is full of character.

It has private access with an outlook over the harbour.

The exterior of Amelia Cottage is deceptive and the cottage provides ample space for a comfortable holiday. All of the 4 windows provide fantastic views and there are also excellent views from the skylights on the top floor.

There are 2 twin bedded rooms and 1 double bedded (with washbasin for extra convenience), a cot and highchair are available if required.  The twin bedroom on the top floor provides the access route to the bathroom and is therefore an ideal way of keeping a watchful and quiet eye on sleeping children.

There is a well equipped kitchen with family dining table and a cosy lounge with multifuel stove for cold winter nights. Free solid fuel is provided for the stove and the cottage also has night storage heaters on the first two floors for which off-peak electricity is provided free of charge.

There are excellent views of the River Fowey from every room and also from the patio area at the front of the cottage. Examples of the stunning views are shown in the photos below.

Local Services
: There are two Public Houses in the village offering an excellent range of food at reasonable prices. Polruan is a small village with only one road in or out. The road goes through the middle of the village and ends up on the village quay. From the quay, a passenger ferry takes you across to Fowey (approx 5-10 minutes journey and runs approx every 15 minutes).  Polruan, itself, offers shopping facilities by way of the Polruan Stores, the Harbour Cafe and The WinklePicker Shop (which is also the Post Office). There is a taxi service in the town and a local bus service operates on different times during the season.

 About The Area:

Polruan is an ancient fishing village famous for its boat building heritage. The Fowey river estuary is a thriving centre for fishing, seafaring, shipbuilding and agriculture. Polruan is part of the parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey which is bounded by water on three sides - Penpoll Creek to the north, the Fowey River to the west and the sea to the south. The natural defences of sea and river, made the area an attractive dwelling place for the earliest inhabitants. This remoteness gives the area its unspoilt charm with its narrow streets and narrower alleyways where flights of slate steps twist between the houses.

Polruan is based on the south coast of Cornwall on the river Fowey, opposite Fowey itself. The beauty of either visiting or coming to stay in Polruan is that it is unspoilt. Being built on the side of a hill it has, thankfully not allowed too much expansion and commercialisation and as a result has retained much of its charm.

Polruan has something to offer everybody.

The Daphne du Maurier Festival, held annually in and around Fowey (for 10 days during May) is a “must” for book lovers who can experience the thrill of recognising the places she described so vividly in her writing and learn more about the author herself. The festival is a celebration to honour her life and work and includes guided walks and readings from celebrity authors, plus drama productions and other local events.

August bank holiday is also a "must" if you enjoy a carnival. Fowey starts the festivities off with their carnival usually a week before bank holiday, with activities every night ending with the candle lit processesion down the river which is followed by a firework display. This has to be seen to be believed. The following week, Polruan has its carnival with a band and fancy dress for all ages. On the quay itself you will find a wide variety of stalls with lots of goodies to purchase. One stall will allow you to buy a ball for the ball rolling competition. They have over a thousand numbered balls that they roll down the main street, which is a rather steep hill. What you do, is to pay to put your name against a particular number ball, and if that ball is the first to reach the bottom of the hill then the prize is yours. The carnival procession starts on the quay and goes to the school field at the top of the village and then parades all the way round the village, collecting money for charity on the way.

For those days out if you wish to venture away from the village, Cornwall has much to offer.  Amongst many others, within easy travelling distance, you will find the World Famous Eden Project (near St Austell) and the Monkey Sanctuary (near Looe).

The Eden Project includes the world's largest greenhouse. Inside the artificial biomes are plants that are collected from all around the world. The project is located in a reclaimed Kaolinite pit and the complex comprises a number of domes that house plant species from around the world, each dome emulating a natural biome. The domes are made out of hundreds of hexagons plus a few pentagons that connect the whole construction; each of these is a transparent cushion made of tough plastic. The first dome emulates a tropical environment, the second a warm temperate, Mediterranean environment.  The Project is constantly expanding and you could return to Amelia Cottage each year to see what is new at "Eden".

The Monkey Sanctuary is home to the The Monkey Sanctuary Trust, a charity established to promote the welfare, conservation and survival of primates. The Sanctuary is home to rescued pet monkeys, and a large colony of Amazonian Woolly Monkeys. The Sanctuary was the first place in the world to successfully breed the Woolly Monkeys outside of their native habitat. Friendly staff are always willing to talk to visitors about about monkey behaviour and what we can all do to help preserve their natural environment. There are also regular workshops for all ages and abilities. After meeting the monkeys, why not have a bite to eat in the Tree Top Cafe or visit the fairtrade gift shop. The Sanctuary is open from 11am to 4.30pm, Sunday to Thursday, each week between the beginning of April and the end of September.
